As you know from my previous post, we recently got a bichon/poodle puppy. The whole family has fallen in love with Teddy and he has everything from the cutest toys and bowls to little sweaters. We’ve also been very health conscious of what he eats from the very beginning.
While normal commercial dog foods contain animal bi-products, wheat and corn that dogs don’t normally digest, we stuck to the more expensive things with actual meat. Right now he eats a mix of both Vets Choice- Health Extension Little Bites and the Blue Buffalo Holistic Dog Food for Small Breeds. Even his treats are Blue Buffalo Health Bars that look and smell like apple yogurt cookies. We do have the Purina bacon strips and Little Ceasar treats that we give on occasion but Teddy loves the health bars the most.
In addition to Teddy, I also have 2 red-ear sliders which are around 4 and a half years old. The photo to the right was taken when they were 1, so they are quite bigger in size now and take up a 20 gallon tank. For the past few years I’ve been feeding them a mix of dry shrimp and pellets. I didn’t decide to read the labels until now but like most commercial dog food these pellets contained mostly wheat and corn products. Filler material. I went to PetSmart and the majority of turtle food contain these things. Same with fish food. I eventually found something called Omega One Natural Protein Formula- Adult Turtle Sticks that are made with salmon, herring and have less of the other junk. They now eat a mix of these pellets, dried shrimp and the occasional veggies and meat from my kitchen as a treat.
What I find extremely fascinating is that I’m health conscious for my pets, but not for myself. I love junk food and don’t think I’d give it up, but I wouldn’t want my pets to be eating junk. I’m curious, what do you feed your pets? I want to know your takes on holistic food. What has worked for you and your pets?
