I Got An Akai MPK Mini for Christmas

dscf4286

For Christmas, one of the things Nash got me was an Akai MPK Mini, my first MIDI keyboard. I still don’t know much about music production but now I have no excuse not to try it!

I started to teach myself Ableton with the help of Lynda.com (free Premium subscription with a Toronto Library Card). Maybe one day I will have a complete song to share with all of you!

Work in Progress: Ride the Tempo Canadian Map

screen-shot-2016-11-05-at-10-20-25-am

I’ve always wanted to have a clickable Canadian map on Ride the Tempo so I finally found a plugin that let me do it. Check it out on the front page. I still have 9000+ posts to go through and tag the provinces but it is live and working!

At the moment, I don’t have many artist from Northern Canada. I would love to change that. If you know any cool Canadian acts from Northwest Territories, Yukon or Nunavut I would love to know!

Playing Music To A Film

All photos by Matt Forsythe

Last Saturday, I performed publically for the first time in a few years. I was the soundtrack for Erwin Olaf’s Waiting project where a lady waits for somebody who never comes. The music was written by Sebastiaan Roestenburg.

As an anxious performer, it was definitely a challenge to maintain composure for over 50 minutes.

It was the first time I had actually played with the film in it’s entirety.

In the end, I was around 1 minute off at the end (I played a bit faster than it was) but I improvised until I saw the film fade out and nobody noticed. Yay!

It was fun to be a performer for once!

I’m Playing Piano at Nuit Blanche

I’ll be facing one of my greatest anxieties on Saturday: performing. I’ll be performing a live soundtrack for Erwin Olaf’s art-video project Waiting during Nuit Blanche on Saturday.

The film features a woman that is forever waiting at a table with a score written by Sebastiaan Roestenburg which will be played live throughout the night by different people.

You can catch it at 134 Queen West 7pm-7am but I will be on at 12:06am!

Music We Grew Up With

If I had a million dollars

A post shared by Tiana Feng (@tianafeng) on

There’s something special about the music we grew up with, that we liked when we were kids or that our parents like. I feel like hearing these songs years later are still exciting (even if some of the original members no longer are in the band for whatever reason). This weekend was full of that at TURF.

I got to see The Barenaked Ladies, Jimmy Eat World, Death Cab for Cutie, LUSH, Ween and more. Photos to come soon!
