..hot sauce is on sale!

We’re currently obsessed Valentina’s black label sauce. It’s so full of flavour!

What is your favourite hot sauce?

TIO’s Urban Mexican

Tonight we happened to be in the Yonge & Eglington area looking for something to eat. Tio’s Urban Mexican looked like a cute spot so we decided to try it. We started with some chips, guac and pico de gallo. I liked that their chips were a mixture of potato and taro.

To drink I had a classic Paloma with grapefruit juice and tequila.

Nash ordered the Alambre: A popular mexican dish consisting of grilled beef topped with chopped bacon, peppers, caramelized onion jam, cheese and guacamole. It was served with crispy tostadas. I loved the sweet onion jam and the juicy steak.

I had the pork belly tacos with hoisin jus, onion jam, crispy carrot chips and orange crema. It was an interesting combination of sweet and savory.

Our food was super flavourful and we ordered the perfect amount for the two of us. It is slightly more expensive than other Mexican places but maybe that’s what the “Urban” in the name describes.

When you go get ice cream too much..

You know you go to your favourite ice cream store too much when you end up on their Instagram! Lansdowne Cone is hands down one of the best ice cream parlours in the city. Their no-nonsense flavours are the best. It’s not about toppings. It’s all about the ice cream.

They also make an effort to hire youth with disabilities, which I think is awesome. Like I need an excuse to eat more ice cream. Hahaha.

Propeller Coffee Dark Roast

Propeller is super close to where I live, so it’s probably going to be my go-to for beans when I am lazy. Their coffees are award winning and deservedly so.

The dark roast is bold but has the nice profile of chocolate & caramel, making it go down super easy.

It’s Ice Cream Season!

I eagerly awaited the seasonal opening of my local ice cream store and made my first visit of the year this weekend. Lansdowne Cone is one of my favourites and I’m happy to have it so close by.

If you’re lucky enough to have independent ice cream shops, support them!

Kracie Pizza Kit

I haven’t done one of these weird candy kit things in a while, and I just couldn’t resist the Pizza one.

This one had many different powder packages, as well as instructions to cut out the designs on the plastic wrap to use as fun pizza boxes and accessories.

My result was not as pretty as the perfectly round ones on the box! The pizza and fries were baked in the microwave for a short amount of time. It allowed the “cheese” to melt and dough to harden a bit.

This one was equally as bizarre as the Mini Burger set. I made a veggie pizza and one that had something that tasted like meat. The “vegetables” on the pizza was a colourful bag of dots that tasted like vegetable chips. The fries tasted like fries. The drink was a fizzy grape drink. The pizza sauce and cheese, did taste real too, with a hint of sweetness. It was all very strange. These are always funnier to make than they are to eat!

Green Tea Kit Kats & Chalet Sauce Lays

I’m on a bit of a weird snack binge lately with Green Tea Kit Kats & Swiss Chalet’s Chalet Sauce Lays. Both are unique and addictive in their own ways.

What weird snacks are you into?

Edoko

A quest for something to eat last weekend in Ottawa, landed us in Edoko Japanese Steakhouse. They have Teppanyaki and a regular menu. We opted for the regular menu because we weren’t sure if we had a lot of time to spend there.

I had the Terriyaki Steak cooked medium rare served with noodles, hibachi shrimp and vegetales. The steak was so tender and flavourful. There was also a lot of it.

It also came with a Chicken Soup and classic green salad.

I also had a glass of plum wine.

The restaurant was very hospitable and the owner came to greet us and make sure everything was to our liking. We had a very nice evening at Edoko!

Broadhead’s Grindstone Amber Ale

While I was in Ottawa, I tried to find some local beer at the closest LCBO and only found this amber ale from Broadhead.

I enjoyed the flavour that hit in just the right places. There was a tinge of sweetness and a drinkable malt. Bold without being too bold.

The Scone Witch

I was in Ottawa for JUNO weekend and I couldn’t resist opening Zomato and looking up places to eat nearby. One of the highest rated places was The Scone Witch, which specializes in sandwiches out of scones.

It was breakfast time when we went so I had The Eggwitch and a cup of Witch’s Brew (coffee). The Eggwitch was a scone stuffed with eggs, ham and old cheddar cheese from St. Albert. We were allowed to choose what type of scone it was made out of and I picked feta. It was delicious. The pastry was light and fluffy with a nice touch of feta. The eggs had a nice creamy texture when combined with the cheese.

The whole thing was eaten quickly. This is definitely a must try if you’re in Ottawa and interestingly not a trendy thing yet in Toronto, the city of weird food things.
