My First Trip to MUJI

IMG_1937 copy
It’s not often I blog about going into a store, but I couldn’t resist this one. Japanese store MUJI had opened up last year but I didn’t follow the hype. Plus, they were so popular that they were completely out of stock for the first few months. I finally paid it a visit today because I was looking for a small shelf for my make-up. MUJI was known for having household goods that were affordable.

IMG_1940When I walked in, I was impressed by the “lack of branding”. It’s part of MUJI’s mission statement to not have branding slapped all over their products. They really do focus on being minimal. In the above photo, these tiny squares are actually T-shirts and towels. How a towel can fit in a cube, I do not know.

IMG_1941These lotions and soaps look so plain, it’s almost amazing in our North American branded world. I guess when you really think about it, their lack of branding IS the brand.

IMG_1938There were so many cool (but totally unnecessary things). Take this beautiful CD player you can hang on your wall for example.

IMG_1939

My favourite section was the stationery section. They had a wide selection of notebooks, paper, pens and post-it notes shaped as cats. It was all affordable! I dragged myself out of there before I bought everything.

I did end up buying this notebook with recycled paper. The paper actually feels smooth, unlike the newsprinty stuff you get here when notebooks are eco friendly. It was only $2.50

DSCF2267I also purchased this random hexagon shaped pen.

DSCF2266And.. I did find the perfect mini-drawer for my makeup!

Tada!

More trips to Muji are in order soon.

Dollarama Review: Chalkboard Mug

DSCF2205

I found this adorable mug at Dollarama that has a mini chalkboard on it. For $2, it came with 2 white pieces of chalk that allowed me to write a message on my cup of joe.

DSCF2206

I liked the bright red of the mug, though the material seems a bit like it can easily be chipped. That’s okay, at least such a creative thing was inexpensive! Now I can wake myself up with a nice message or surprise visitors with a cup of tea.

Dollarama Reviews: Hair Chalk

DSCF1722

I bought this hair chalk from Dollarama. It was a premium item at $3. I thought it would be fun to put some colour in my head for Atomic Lollipop last weekend.

DSCF1723

This is me before I did anything to my hair.

DSCF1724

There are 3 colours and are literally like chalk you put on your head. The instructions also suggest that you brush your hair afterwards.

DSCF1726

It was barely noticeable, and this was after I put a lot on. Any more and it would have looked like I had a clunk of something in my head.

DSCF1728

Here’s after I combed it through a little. As you can see it’s not very effective on black hair (unless you possibly use a shit ton).

Anyways, would not buy this again and don’t really recommend it unless you have blonde hair.. but then you might as well just use regular chalk.

Birchbox: June 2015 Edition

DSCF0405

I’m a little late posting this but my June Birchbox arrived last week and the theme of the month is Adventure. It had a code for a draw as well as some travel tips from Meghan Markle of The Tig.

DSCF0407

The first item was this Coastal Scents Palette Sampler from their Revealed 3 collection. I love Coastal Scents’ eyeshadow, they are always pigmented and affordable so I’m excited to try this.

DSCF0412

This Naobay  Oxygenating Cream Moisturizer is made with avocado and olive oils and is made of 98% natural products.

DSCF0416

I love the design of this Number 4 (that’s the brand name) clarifying shampoo. It is full of vitamins to restore lost moisture and shine.

DSCF0417

After shampooing I can try this sea salt spray from Parlor by Jeff Chastain. It’s great for getting soft beachy waves.

DSCF0418

I’ve been having such a busy few weeks that I can’t wait to try these Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels by Skyn Iceland. Hope I can get rid of some dark circles!

DSCF0410

This month there was this bonus little hair tie from Emi-Jay . It’s so cute!

I’m in love with this month’s box and can’t wait to have a relaxing night and try some of these things.

New Business Cards by Moo

DSCF0399

I needed new business cards to match the new theme I launched this year on Ride the Tempo. I thought regular cards were a little boring and had too much white space. I really wanted something simple with my name and e-mail address. I previously had my cellphone number on there, but I didn’t always want to give it out when people asked for a cards.

I looked to Moo Cards, a company I discovered via my Klout Perk for 10% off. The perk never seemed to expire so I thought I’d finally use it! I liked their selection of cards and the Mini Cards were perfect. I also opted for the “Luxe” option which added a bit of thickness and a stripe of black.

DSCF0380

They arrived two weeks later in a lovely packaged box. What I like about Moo is that while one side must remain stationary you can actually have however many designs on the other side. This means that if you have multiple people working for the same company, you can share the batch! I am going to send some to my writer Mark as a surprise.

These cards are thick so will stand out from regular sized business cards. I’m excited to have them around during NXNE this week!

Dollarama Reviews: Conair 2 in 1 Brush

IMG_1423I haven’t done a Dollarama Review for a while but don’t worry they aren’t going anywhere. I still live near Dollarama. Recently I needed a brush so I thought this 2 in 1 brush from Conair looked like a great choice. It promised to help straight hair or give you bouncy curls. At $3 it was a premium item at Dollarama.

The brush has a button that changes it back from curly to straight. The problem is that the button often gets stuck (that’s what I get from buying a brush at Dollarama!). When I use it as a straight brush it works perfectly fine and does indeed give me smooth hair but when I tried to use it as a round brush, my hair would get stuck in the folding grooves.

I would not recommend this as a 2 n 1 brush. Just a brush.

New Raincoat From Helly Hansen

IMG_9834

Last year during music festival season I got rained on a couple of times. While plastic bags and disposable ponchos saved me sort of they weren’t that good for keeping water out. By the end of the day, I was freezing. This year I decided I wouldn’t let that happen and so I bought a raincoat that was both functional and stylish.

IMG_9848

I visited Raindrops at Yonge & Bloor which had a great assortment of jackets and rain accessories. I fell in love with the Helly Hansen Kirkwall coat in purple! It’s well fitted and has a tie around the waist. It’s also both wind and waterproof with a venting back. SO I AM TOTALLY READY FOR YOU RAIN. COME AT ME.

Power Wallet

IMG_5974

My favourite new daily accessory is the Power Wallet from The Photojojo. It’s a super functional faux-leather wallet/clutch that has a built in battery for charging my phone.

IMG_5975

Inside it came with instructions and an adapter for my iPhone 5S. The battery can be charged by plugging the USB end to your computer or Apple blocks. On full charge, the wallet can charge around 1 and a half iPhones to full.

IMG_7292

The phone fits right in when you are charging it so you can use it as a mini clutch. There are also many slots and sections for coins, cash and cards. Now I’m ready for a night on the town without my phone dying on me!

Photoshop Magnets

IMG_7287

My fridge is pretty bare at the moment so as a part of my recent Photojojo shopping spree, I got these awesome Photoshop magnets.

IMG_7288

The magnets come in two sheets which include tools and panels that parody the real thing. There is even a dialog box and the Apple swirling ball of death if you are so inclined to include that.

IMG_7291

I decided to decorate it with one of my Origrami prints of Teddy! Doesn’t it almost look just like a Photoshop screen?

My Battery Buddy

IMG_7042

Summer music festival season is starting soon and the biggest problem I always run into is my phone battery not lasting until the end of the day. As a social media person, this is a big no no. I decided to prepare this year and bought the cheero Power Plus from Photojojo. Whenever you order on their website, a dinosaur comes along with your package.

IMG_7043

This battery pack contains up to 10400mAh. This is always a number you should be paying attention to whenever buying any sort of portable battery. My iPhone 5S is around 1900 mAh, which means this battery can power up to 10 iPhones when on a full charge.I tend to have a lot of friends that try to borrow my batteries (I had smaller power sticks in the past) so this can be super useful! It even has two USB slots so two people can charge their phone at the same time.It also comes with the charging cable (iPhone cables you must provide) and a little pouch.

IMG_7047

It’s a bit bigger than a regular power stick and heavier than I thought but I will totally not regret it when I’m out of juice in a field.
