What I Ate At Festival d’été

I was in Quebec for two days to attend Festival d’été. I explored food in the city a little bit (which I will post separately), but I did grab some food truck eats at the festival to continue my #tianaeatsfestivals hashtag.

Food trucks are still a relatively new thing in Québec, as they had local bylaws to change before they could have them, so there wasn’t a giant amount of choice. I did snag a bison grilled cheese sandwich from a nomadic truck called SAGA that was delicious.

On the second day, I had some Thai popcorn shrimp from a truck called Food Fighters 504.

It’s fun to see what food truck fare is like in different cities. The lines were super long for all of them. Here’s hoping more come to Quebec soon!

Chefs Plate: Tumeric Coconut Salmon

Our second Chefs Plate meal this week was a tumeric coconut salmon served with green beans and a side of cracked wheat and parsley.

This recipe was easy to follow and now I know the perfect amount of time to cook a piece of salmon. It’s also amazing how flavourful you can make something with a few easy steps.

Chefs Plate: Turkey Taco Salad

We’ve been moving and unpacking all this week so we didn’t really have too much time planning meals and getting groceries. Thankfully, Chefs Plate helped out and the box came to our door step the day we moved in.

Yesterday I cooked a Turkey Taco Salad. All the ingredients were fresh and it was full of flavour. I loved the cilantro sour cream, as well as the spices in the turkey. Plus, it felt like I was eating healthy, in comparison to the takeout I was eating all last week.

Bobbie Sue’s Mac + Cheese

Over the weekend, I went to Bobbie Sue’s Mac and Cheese Stand for the first time.

I ordered the Carbonara mac which had pancetta and grana padano. The pancetta gave it a saltiness and the cheese was like a parmesan from a different part of Italy. The dish was very flavouful. I only had the small portion but it was all I needed.

Reinhart’s Red Apple Cider

I love cider, so everytime I see a new one at the LCBO I must try it. This Reinhart one is by the same people who make Apple Cider and baked goods, so they had to know what they were doing with their apples.

This cider was light, not too tart and had a crisp taste. At only 3.8% alcohol, this is more for pleasure drinking than a night out of the town.

I drank this and fell asleep

A few weeks ago, outside of a music festival, some promo people were handing out cans of Mellow Mood for free.

It was a super hot day so I took one thinking the calming part wouldn’t work and I instantly got calmer and sleepier. It’s a non alcoholic drink with camomile, lavender and other natural calming agents.

It must be a high concentration of these things because as soon as I hit the pillow I was fast asleep and had the best sleep ever.

Whatever this is worked I guess but the flavour I had didn’t taste very good.

Jagabee Lightly Salted Potato Crisps

I found something better chips. FRIES?! Or at least this tastes eerily (or close enough) like fries. They are even crispy like all the time and perfectly salted. They are somewhat hard to find and seem to be out of stock a lot at the Asian grocery store. I must stock cabinets full of these.

Pizza Party at Superpoint

Recently, I had a work dinner at hip pizza joint, Superpoint. We did a set menu that featured something called a Pizza Party where pies kept coming.

To start, we had a fried rice ball with red sauce and cheese.

The garlic bread was heavenly, it was hard not to fill up on it.

There was a radicchio, escarole, and greens salad that had grated pecorino cheese and a light vinaigrette. We found it a tiny bit too peppery.

Their Caesar salad, however, was rather irresistible and everyone was quite a fan of the hickory sticks on top.

Their cocktail menu was extensive and this zombie-named drink had a flaming lime in it.

Our pizza party began with a Pepperoni pizza. Their pizzas had thin crusts, so it made it easier to try multiple.

The kale and mushroom pizza with white sauce provided a different flavour pallette between white sauces.

My favourite was the pie with bacon, pineapple, peppers and onions.

There was also a radicchio and gorgonzola pizza with white sauce. My photo is terrible, but the pizza was not!

Dessert was delicious fried donuts with a side of custard sauce.

I enjoyed our pizza party dinner and the back room is also a cool place to host a large group.

Chef’s Plate

Last week, Nash and I tried out Chef’s Plate with 3 meals for two people. The ingredients came separately packaged in paper bags with the meats under ice packs which kept it all fresh until I came home from work.

Nash made 2/3 of the meals because I started working a different schedule and ending late. The first was a Lemon & Pesto Chicken Pappardelle pasta.

While he didn’t finely chop the spices, the pasta was super flavourful and delicious. I loved the textural addition of seeds. Who knew that making your own pesto could be this simple? I’m definitely keeping this recipe in mind for future pasta-making.

The second meal he made was a Shaoxing-style steak with a lot of Asian flavours. It was served with flavourful sweet potatoes, snap peas and green beans.

This was a tiny bit more complicated than the first, but our meat turned out perfectly cooked!

On my day off, I decided to do the final package. It was a blackened basa. I like that it came with veggies in a variety of colours.

For the first time, my fish was perfectly cooked and not stuck to the pan. The millet salad felt super healthy but was filling and the lime, mango and honey a nice sweetness against the paprika in the fish.

I enjoyed all my Chef’s Plate selections that week and hope to use it occasionally on lazy weeks. It’s fun and gives you a new arsenal of recipe ideas for the future. Sometimes you want to cook new things, but it’s much easier if you don’t have to pick up the groceries too!

#tianaeatsfestivals

Ever since I started going to music festivals, I’d post about the food I ate.

I decided that I needed my own Instagram hashtag so over the weekend I made myself #tianaeatsfestivals and retroactively tagged a bunch of past posts. You can find my food adventures there.

My favourite find this yer were these Parmesan tater tots from Toben Food by Design:
