Birchbox: May 2015 Edition

IMG_7031

The theme of this month’s beautiful Birchbox is Cupcakes and Cashmere, inspired by an Emily Schuman book. The box also focuses on organic products that can transform your moods.

IMG_7037Speaking of mood enhancing, there was a soap from Not Soap Radio that has “pheramone activation”. I used it in a bubble bath and it smells delightfully like berries.

This organic Stem Cellular Moisturiser from Juice Beauty is for firming the skin and hiding wrinkles.

IMG_7039Dr. Lipp’s original nipple balm for lips might have a slightly silly name but it uses a formula that was historically used by nursing mothers. It can be used as a lip balm or on dry elbows and cuticles.

Shaving is also a relaxing guilty pleasure and this shea butter shave cream from Whish smells delicious.

Lastly, there was the Expressionist Bio Extreme Mascara from W3LL PEOPLE that I’m super excited to try because I love mascaras! I have never used an organic one so I’m very interested to see how it holds up in daily wear.

I’m very happy with my May Birchbox and I will continue being a subscriber in June. It’s only $10.95 (+$4.95 shipping) and it’s like a lovely pick me up once a month.

Impress Press-On Manicure by Broadway Nails

IMG_2637
A few months ago I received my first #MapleVoxBox from Influenster, a service that is a little like Klout but encourages you to be more involved.
IMG_2632The package was mailed to me in a little box with an Influenster sticker.
IMG_2638This edition featured Impress Manicure’s Press on Nails. Everybody received different colours. I got a purple and gold patter, as well as a bright orange. Both were things I wouldn’t normally wear but I kept the purple and gold and gave the orange to my little sister.

Each package has 24 nails in different sizes. They’re quite easy to put on. You just peel off the back and press down on your nails. Originally, I put them on upside down because I liked the rounded edge facing up. However, the rounded edge is supposed to line-up with cuticles. You get a longer-lasting nail when you put them on the right way.

IMG_8901I thought they looked nice, like I had a fancy manicure. However, I didn’t really like the general “feel” of them. They constantly felt like a burden on my fingers and whenever I brushed my fingers through my hair, they would get caught or fall off. They’re nice if you lack time and want to get fancy for a night out, but not something I’d wear day to day.

TONYMOLY Kiss Kiss Lip Scrub

IMG_0670
I rarely post about products (unless they are social media or internet obtained), but lately I’ve had an obsession with Asian beauty products because of their adorable designs. In addition, they are super affordable. This lip scrub from Tony Moly comes in a lip shaped container.

The cream itself is white with little sand-like beads. There weren’t really any English instructions, or room for any, (since there wasn’t a box) so I figured it out by reading other people’s reviews of the product. I took a tiny amount and rubbed it on my lips for a minute or two and felt the granules rubbing off the dead skin. It didn’t hurt or anything. After washing it off, my lips felt much smoother!

I recommend this product for dry lips, or any one who is a chronic lip biter (like me). It makes lip stick and glosses last much longer the next day too.

Lovely Me:ex Masks from The Face Shop

IMG_7200I bought these masks from The Face Shop mainly because of the adorable packaging. There’s a third, but it’s mainly for breakouts which rarely happens nowadays. Both were very affordable at $6 each.

IMG_7195The Pore Ghassoul Mask is made from Moroccan ingredients and supposed to remove dirt as well as smooth and even skin tone.

IMG_7192The bottle inside was just as cute as the packaging! When you open it up, the product inside is not so appealing in colour (it’s grey). It’s a wash-off mask that is left on for 15-20 minutes. I found it worked very well at removing any oil on my face. I didn’t really notice a difference with blackheads but my face definitely felt clean and smooth.

IMG_7198The Waterful Grapefruit Mask is a sleeping mask that moisturises dry skin.

IMG_7196It also has a charming monkey container. The product is pink like the packaging and has a citrus smell. I found my skin totally sucks this up over night and does feel smoother but doesn’t stay hydrated for that long. Therefore it’s not that skin clogging and I use it a couple times a week. You don’t need to put a lot on your face so one package can last a very long time.

Face It Gradation Nail Polish

IMG_7420
When I was at the Face Shop a few weeks ago, I picked up this inexpensive nail polish set for $6ish.
IMG_7419
Inside are three different colours labelled 1, 2, 3. They are to be applied in layers from the inner nail bed to the tip of the nail resulting in a gradient effect.
IMG_7421
The above photo is a test with only one coat. I found the sparkles in bottle three to be a little bit too large to effectively apply on the tips-only. Otherwise, I love the colours together! You can watch me test it out in this vlog.

The full line of Face it Gradation Nail Polish is available on Amazon!

How To Tell If You Should Throw Away Those Clothes

If your closets and drawers are bursting like mine were, that would be a good enough reason to reach into them and see what things you can donate to the closest shelter. Believe me, it’s hard sometimes to chuck something. There are memories attached to them or even the tiniest feeling that you might use that tied-dyed shirt for something.

However, if you want to do some cleaning, here are some reasons you should throw out that piece of garment.

1. They are broken. Maybe it’s the hole in the armpit, or zipper that won’t zip. And you won’t find the lanyard of that sweater. It’s been eaten by the dryer.
2. There’s a giant stain on it. No matter how many times you put it through the wash, it isn’t coming out.
3. They belong to somebody else. Perhaps it’s an ex’s shirt, unless you’re actually going to turn it into a dress, I’d burn it or give it to someone in need.
4. They are too big for you. If they’re too big, you’ve probably lost a ton of weight and throwing your larger size clothes away is the last step of the process. There is no need to turn back. Or maybe you bought some clothes on boxing day last Christmas that were a bit too wide. I bet you don’t wear them.
5. They are too small for you. Face it, we all grow up. I have grown out of pants. My high-burger diets probably don’t help, but I’m pretty sure the dryer magically shrinks them by an inch every time just to mess with me. Make sure you have clothes that are right for your body type.
6. When was the last time you wore that? If it hasn’t been since Halloween, maybe it’s for a reason. If you’re going to keep things that are to be used as costumes/props, don’t keep them in your closet.
7. They are no longer in fashion. This rule doesn’t need to be followed as closely, as things do come back in fashion once in a while. However, if they aren’t following current trends, why not just hide them away in a while? They can be a treasure chest to come back to later when you’ve forgotten about them.

It’s nice to make room in the closet of our lives. I no longer how to stressfully shuffle through a puddle full of stuff to get to the things I want. Plus, it makes room (and an excuse) to do some more shopping again!

Look #3

Here is look #3 of my 30 Day Challenge.

I am not leaving the house today so I kept it simple. I used pale white eyeshadow as highlight and some simple brown eyeliner. I dyed my hair dark brown today and a dark lip really compliments it.
