Dollarama Reviews: Hair Chalk

DSCF1722

I bought this hair chalk from Dollarama. It was a premium item at $3. I thought it would be fun to put some colour in my head for Atomic Lollipop last weekend.

DSCF1723

This is me before I did anything to my hair.

DSCF1724

There are 3 colours and are literally like chalk you put on your head. The instructions also suggest that you brush your hair afterwards.

DSCF1726

It was barely noticeable, and this was after I put a lot on. Any more and it would have looked like I had a clunk of something in my head.

DSCF1728

Here’s after I combed it through a little. As you can see it’s not very effective on black hair (unless you possibly use a shit ton).

Anyways, would not buy this again and don’t really recommend it unless you have blonde hair.. but then you might as well just use regular chalk.

Birchbox: June 2015 Edition

DSCF0405

I’m a little late posting this but my June Birchbox arrived last week and the theme of the month is Adventure. It had a code for a draw as well as some travel tips from Meghan Markle of The Tig.

DSCF0407

The first item was this Coastal Scents Palette Sampler from their Revealed 3 collection. I love Coastal Scents’ eyeshadow, they are always pigmented and affordable so I’m excited to try this.

DSCF0412

This Naobay  Oxygenating Cream Moisturizer is made with avocado and olive oils and is made of 98% natural products.

DSCF0416

I love the design of this Number 4 (that’s the brand name) clarifying shampoo. It is full of vitamins to restore lost moisture and shine.

DSCF0417

After shampooing I can try this sea salt spray from Parlor by Jeff Chastain. It’s great for getting soft beachy waves.

DSCF0418

I’ve been having such a busy few weeks that I can’t wait to try these Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels by Skyn Iceland. Hope I can get rid of some dark circles!

DSCF0410

This month there was this bonus little hair tie from Emi-Jay . It’s so cute!

I’m in love with this month’s box and can’t wait to have a relaxing night and try some of these things.

I Got My Haircut

After years of either cutting my hair myself or going to First Choice, I decided to find a real hair stylist. I wanted one that was in my neighbourhood and looked trendy. Since I had no loyalty to literally anywhere, I had no idea where to start if I were to call places for appointments.

Instead, I decided that I would take a walk on my half-day (Fridays) and find a place in my area that would take walk-ins and looked trendy at the same time. There are a lot that don’t fit neither description in the area. However, I landed in Salon AF and their staff was very welcoming. I was paired with a stylist named Suzy and she listened to all my requests. I found this important because I find that sometimes stylists do more of what they want instead of really listening to the customer which was my fear with cheaper walk-in places.

I wanted to freshen up my flat hair with some layers, but at the same time not look like a bush. I didn’t want it too short and to have real blunt bangs that looked like they have a purpose being there. I got exactly what I wanted and am super with my happy with my haircut. Plus a bonus is that the salon offers free bang trims between cuts so no more ruining my own hair.

Thanks Salon AF! I will definitely be back (with an appointment) for my next cut and/or colour.

Birchbox: May 2015 Edition

IMG_7031

The theme of this month’s beautiful Birchbox is Cupcakes and Cashmere, inspired by an Emily Schuman book. The box also focuses on organic products that can transform your moods.

IMG_7037Speaking of mood enhancing, there was a soap from Not Soap Radio that has “pheramone activation”. I used it in a bubble bath and it smells delightfully like berries.

IMG_7040

This organic Stem Cellular Moisturiser from Juice Beauty is for firming the skin and hiding wrinkles.

IMG_7039Dr. Lipp’s original nipple balm for lips might have a slightly silly name but it uses a formula that was historically used by nursing mothers. It can be used as a lip balm or on dry elbows and cuticles.

IMG_7035

Shaving is also a relaxing guilty pleasure and this shea butter shave cream from Whish smells delicious.

IMG_7038

Lastly, there was the Expressionist Bio Extreme Mascara from W3LL PEOPLE that I’m super excited to try because I love mascaras! I have never used an organic one so I’m very interested to see how it holds up in daily wear.

I’m very happy with my May Birchbox and I will continue being a subscriber in June. It’s only $10.95 (+$4.95 shipping) and it’s like a lovely pick me up once a month.

Birchbox: April 2015 Edition

IMG_3594
I had gifted my little sister with a 3 month subscription to Birchbox, but I recently decided to get my own.
IMG_3589
IMG_3590
There was a bit of a shipping error but the customer service was awesome and fixed it right away and gave me a free box next month for the trouble.
IMG_3603Everyone who ordered April’s box received a Beauty Blender ($18) and a liquid cleaner for the brush. This alone was worth the Birchbox as it’s a must-have in every beauty aficionado’s collection.

IMG_3600

I don’t like fragrance’s but Birchbox has an option to receive them only a few times a year. This Harvey Prince one had cute spring packaging though!

IMG_3595

I’m excited to try this 12 Benefits Instant Healthy Hair Treatment that is an all-in-one and detangles, hydrates, protects and repairs past damage.

IMG_3597

This delicious cream from Perlier was the next item in the box.

IMG_3604

I thought this was a bottle of nail polish but it’s actually a full-sized version of Jelly Pong Pong’s Glow Getter highlighter ($16.50). It’s not for nails at all but for giving skin a pearlescent shimmer. Perfect for parties!

I’m pretty excited to try all these quality Birchbox products and can’t wait for my complimentary box next month. To get your own use my referral code here: https://www.birchbox.ca/invite/b38rd

Ipsy Glam Bag – April 2015

IMG_3337

I was undecided whether to stay with Ipsy after my first bag but since I was too on unsubscribing I received the April glam bag. This month’s theme was Beautifully Bohemian. The products came in a cute straw-like bag.

IMG_3338

Like last time, I’ve never heard of most of these brands. I am excited to try the Hikari blush which I received a full size of and retails around $15 according to their website. That alone was worth the Ipsy bag.

IMG_3343

I received a Jorel Parker fragrance. I was really disappointed to receive this since I am sensitive to fragrances and occasionally allergic to them. There’s actually nowhere on the Ipsy profile page where you can specify your distaste for fragrances. Birchbox at least has an option to limit the amount of fragrances you receive.

IMG_3346

I am excited to try this sample of Starlooks lipgloss which is supposed to be non-sticky and long lasting.

IMG_3347

I also received this Hey Honey Good Morning honey silk facial serum. It’s like a light cream that goes under makeup.

IMG_3349

Lastly was this Nude Dude eyeshadow from The Balm Cosmetics. I thought the packaging was rather hilarious!

Besides the fragrance, I was happy with the rest of my Ipsy items this month. I also subscribed to Birchbox for April but haven’t received it yet. I’m excited to compare the two in the same month.

L’Oreal Paris Fibralogy Kit

IMG_3099
Influenster recently sent me L’Oreal Paris Fibrology’s shampoo, conditioner and serum. The line uses filloxane, a patented ingredient that helps thicken hair. Beyond this, I don’t really know what it is. I tried Googling but it didn’t bring up much information.

IMG_1158 This is a photo of me when I first woke up in the morning. My hair was greasy, also it’s kind of thinning more and more as I was growing in age. Insert sadface.

I used everything as directed. I’m usually heavy-handed with shampoo since my hair is greasy but I found this particular needed less than usual to get my hair evenly soaped. The serum was applied after rinsing the shampoo and conditioner was added immediately after. All the products had a faint fresh smell. A little like clean babies.

Anyways here is a photo of me a few hours later after letting my hair air dry out side. I didn’t comb it or anything.
IMG_1167

There’s a noticeable difference in smoothness, cleanliness and volume. It didn’t feel heavier even with the added volume. This is only after one use. The instructions say that after 5 uses there will be a more notable difference. I’m a fan of the line already. It is making my hair look super healthy with very little extra effort!

This product was complimentary thanks to Influenster.

Can You Tell I Dyed My Hair?

IMG_1110
Yesterday I bought a box of L’Oreal Superior Preference Noir Fatal hair colour in a deep plum colour (NF03). It was essentially a black colour that was supposed to show highlights of dark purple.

IMG_1113
Here’s a photo after I dyed my hair. Can you tell the difference?

There isn’t really much difference. It was a darker colour on my hair so it coloured my lighter ends. However the shine ended up being more red than purple. My hunt for a purple highlight colour continues!

OROGOLD

IMG_0007

I bought these OROGOLD products 6 months ago. It was October and we were celebrating something at the end of the work day so I had had some drinks. For some reason I decided to go shopping afterwards at Yonge & Bloor. The sales lady outside the OROGOLD shop handed me a sample and I took it. Before I knew it, I was taken into the store and offered a demonstration. I was there for at least 30 minutes and I really needed to pee so I told her no thank you to the price she offered. Then she gave me a final offer of $60 for the 24k Deep Peeling Mask and Renewal Night cream so I said FINE. Whatever. I just really wanted to leave and pee. According to the prices on their official site, I actually got a decent deal.

I’ve been using the products twice a week for 6 months now so I’ll give you an honest review despite their semi-annoying sales tactics.

Both products came in little spheres in a fancy box with a certificate of authenticity. They definitely looked like they were luxury products.

IMG_0015

The 24K Deep Peeling mask had the consistency of glue with little gold flakes. To be honest, I don’t really know the advantage of having gold in facial products but it looks nice. I used it mostly in my T-zone, and around my lips. It did a good job of rubbing off dead skin and my face did feel smooth immediately after. The trick is to leave it on for 45secs-1 min before rubbing it off. The sales lady recommended I only use this once a week, but I decided to use it twice a week and it seems fine. I think any more would probably dry your skin though.

IMG_0018

Each time I used the peeling mask, I would immediately follow with the night cream. On the box it says you can use this every day but I also have other products at my disposal and did not want to waste this pricey cream. It also had gold flakes and a smell that was faint and not too strong.

After each OROGOLD routine, my skin did feel softer and smoother but it wouldn’t last more than a day or two which is why I decided to use it twice a week. Another thing I have noticed is that I used to have occasional breakouts but have experienced a lot less since using this. I can’t if it was OROGOLD or a combination of different products though.

Would I recommend this? While I like the feeling of my skin after the peel, I don’t know if I would purchase again at regular price. I would also stay away from the store as the sales people are way too aggressive!

My First Ipsy Glam Bag

IMG_1371

I finally received my first ipsy glam bag. It’s like the competitor of Birchbox that is affiliated with make up guru Michelle Phan. The service is only $10 a month (but since I’m in Canada it is around $20). Unlike Birchbox, many of the items are full size or bigger samples.

IMG_1364

It arrived in a hot pink envelope that certainly good not be missed.

IMG_1376

Each month the products also come with a mini make up bag. The March theme was Floral Fantasy so the floral printed bag was fitting.

IMG_1379

The first item was this Pixi by Petra mineral eyeshadow duo.

IMG_1377

Next was this Glow Oil Treatment to get shiny and hydrated hair.

IMG_1375This NYX butter lipstick in POPS EXPLOSIF came in full size ($7.99).

ivory

I forgot to take a photo of it but I also got a full-sized Chella Ivory Lace Highlighter ($18).

IMG_1374

Lastly, there was an Oval concealer brush from Crown Brush ($6).

People like to compare ipsy and Birchbox but I find that they are two very different services. Ipsy provides bigger sizes and great value, but I find that Birchbox delivers higher end products that you can try before you spend money on the full sized costly products. It’s really up to you to decide which service you like better.
