The 3 Brewers

img_5448

I went to a 3 Brewers finally this week. The one near the Eaton’s Centre is huge! Going to the bathroom is like navigating a labyrinth.

Anyways, I couldn’t go there without ordering a bunch of beers so I had the Traditional Et Cetera which was 4 4oz tasters of their White, Blonde, Amber and Brown beers. I liked the blonde the best. It was dry and had a fruity bitterness.

img_5449

I paired my darker beers with their version of a Steak Frites. My steak was perfectly cooked to medium rare and seasoned with an herb butter. The fries had a hint of garlic.

This is a decent place with many locations to casually hang out with friends, have a drink and some food.

Barrio Cerveceria

dscf4066

Recently, I went to Barrio Cerveceria, a Mexican restaurant in Leslieville with a friend.

We began with an order of Ole Ole Guacomole. The guacamole was decent. I think it was supposed to have pico de gallo but I didn’t really see any.

dscf4068

Next we had the Hole Mole!, a tuna tostada made of tuna tartare, butter lettuce, beans pureé, mole sauce, crema, cotija cheese on a baked tostada. I found that the mole and cheese overwhelmed the fish. There was also a slightly weird flavour in it.

dscf4069

We shared an order of Mexican Street corn in a cob with spiced mayo, cotija cheese and scallions. I can’t resist a grilled corn and this one was full of flavour.

dscf4070

The El Cartel shrimp ceviche had a cucumber broth with coriander pickled tomatillo and pickled red onion. It was a very interesting combination of flavours.

dscf4071

My favourite was the Marinero, Marinero cod ceviche with mango sauce, pico de gallo, anise-hibiscus flower, inferno salsa and coriander. I loved the presentation with the mango sitting on top of the inferno sauce. One sauce calmed the other and added a nice tart sweetness.

dscf4064

I washed the food down with Smoked Margarita.

dscf4074

For desert I had the Pastel de Reyes made with corn bread tres leches, carmelized banana, chocolate ice cream and mint. There were also fresh berries. This was a beautifully delicious dessert that didn’t last long!

I thought the dishes here had hits and misses but it was worth coming here for the dessert and cod ceviche.

Burgatory Birthday

dscf4092

For Nash’s annual burger birthday we checked out Burgatory which is located at the former home of Hey Meatball!

I ordered the Envy Burger which had fried egg, tomato jam, guacomole, tortilla chips. It was not too heavy and I loved the tomato jam.

dscf4093

Nash had the Wrath Burger: Hell Sauce (homemade roasted poblano and chili de arbol sauce), pickled jalapeño, red onion, lettuce, tomato and havarti.

dscf4094

I couldn’t resist getting the truffle oil and parmesan fries. They handled the truffle oil delicately so it perfectly balanced the parmesan for an addictive side.

dscf4091

They had homemade sodas. Nash had a cherry coke.

dscf4090

I had a delicious grape and ginger soda.

We enjoyed our burgers and Burgatory. I think we grew up from the ridiculously gluttonous burgers and now just appreciate the ones with a great flavour profile.

A Lovely Night At Mistura

dscf4036

Last Monday, a group of bloggers and I were invited to dine at Mistura on Davenport. The owner Paolo Paolini dined with us and told us wonderful tales of his many years in the restaurant industry.

He was the original founder of Splendido, a benchmark restaurant in Toronto. Mistura opened in 1997. That is almost 20 years of existence! I don’t know many restaurants in Toronto have that lasted so long. It seems like most places rarely last 5 years nowadays.

dscf4025

We were welcomed with pre-dinner snacks of homemade charcuterie made by head chef Klaus Rohrich.

dscf4026

There was also crostini with eggplant and fresh herbs.

dscf4029

And another of Warm mushroom and gorgonzola.

dscf4023

I’m always unsure about pâté, but their Duck Liver Pâté & Mostarda was to die for. It was not heavy, and had a gentle sweetness. I could’ve had many of these if I didn’t have a full meal up ahead.

dscf4028

Last but not least (of the small bites) were these Crispy Gulf Shrimp and Cantaloupe Trusses. There was a hint of orange juice in the melon that helped it not overpower the shrimp. I loved delicate attention to flavour and textures throughout the meal.

dscf4024

Throughout the night we were treated to Prosecco and fine wines.

dscf4035

dscf4034There was table side bread and dip with various kinds including Calabrese, Focaccia and flatbread.

dscf4040The real dinner started with a gorgeous Sweet Corn Soup with roasted onion & crab salsa, corn croutons and crème fraîche on top. The soup itself had no cream but the corn was blended to a smooth silky texture. Paolini likes to focus on seasonal ingredients with an Italian influence of flavours. Corn may not be that popular in Italy, but the love and care they put into the soup really showed the influences of Italian cooking.

dscf4044

Our next antipasti was a this trio of Balsamic Glazed Lamb Ribs, Crispy Artichokes and Wile Board Agnolotti.

dscf4045

The Crispy Artichoke was fried to perfection, with each individual leaf coated with just the right amount of breading and blooming like a flower. It was not heavy and served with a gribiche of fresh herbs, gherkin, caper and boiled egg. People at our table said this was better than the ones they had in Greece!

dscf4047

The Balsamic Glazed Lamb Ribs were marinated for 3 days and slow cooked for many hours. They were fall off the bone and melted in my mouth. I wish I had an entire rack of them. It also came with a vegetable that had a bit of mint yogurt on it.

dscf4046

The last thing was an Agnolotti (like a ravioli) with wild board. On top was the delicious jus used for roasting, dried cherries and wilted greens.

dscf4054

The main course was a taste of two different things. On the left we had the a pan-seared Branzino with lemon scented bean salad, manila clams and olive oil poached cherry tomatoes.

The second was a Boneless Free Range Chicken with squash caponata, chesnut purée, roasted onions and sautéed spinach. There was also a fried piece of chicken skin.

I love how each individual ingredient is treated with care. Nothing felt like an afterthought. The fish and chicken was perfectly cooked. The vegetables each had their own flavour whether it was the hint of lemon, or the juiciness of the oil poached tomatoes.

dscf4059

Not entirely sure how I had room for dessert but how could I resist this Vanilla Panna Cotta with berries, strawberry meringue crumble and a crispy sugar tuille. This was to die for!

Dessert also came with a small glass of Vieni Dolce Piccante Graspa made in Beamsville, Ontario. It had a hint of chili but also a sweetness that made it less harsh than other “grappa” I have tried.

It was the perfect ending to a superb meal at Mistura.

Don Don Izakaya

dscf3942 I recently went to Don Don Izakaya near Yonge and Dundas. It is a place with sharing plates and there were tons of things on the menu, including tons of drinks.

dscf3946

The first thing I got was Jaja Beef. There was a mini grill where you cooked your own beef, asparagus, oyster mushroom, and zuchini that you could dip in a bbq sauce with miso and ponzu vinegar. The sauce was really good though you had to watch it because if there wasn’t enough butter or got to hot it would stick easily!

dscf3947

My favourite was this Torched sushi made with salmon, orka, green onion and mayonnaise. I hate okra normally but this one was not slimy and gave a nice texture. The whole thing melted in my mouth.

dscf3951

Next I had a BC tuna Smoky Hay Sashimi, which is literally seared over burning hay. According to our server it was to be eaten with a piece of radish, garlic and some salt. It definitely delivered on the smoke! It almost reminded me of ham but was a fresh fish.

dscf3937

To drink I had a Oolong Hi-Tea which I think had shochu in it.

dscf3952

For dessert I had a Brûlée Style Pudding, which was essentially a creme brûlée. The top was hot and crunchy but I found the middle cold.

While I found the food decent, it was quite expensive. The bill came out to about $70 for such small portions of food. I left feeling like I still needed a snack!

King’s Taco

dscf3298

Nash and I went to the newly opened King’s Taco recently on St. Clair West. It’s a very traditional, non-hipster place. When we placed our order, they gave us free nachos with various hot salsas, limes, onions and cilantro.

dscf3300

I had a refreshing Agua Michelada to drink. It was like a lemony soda with liquor.

dscf3301

Both Nash and I ordered plates of taco stuffing where we had to make our own tacos. I had the Ya Vas which was green & red peppers, onion, ham, cheese and avocado.

dscf3303

Nash had the A la Mexicana: beef, jalapeno peppers, onion, tomato, chorizo and cheese.

dscf3304

We had fresh corn tortillas to make our tacos with.

Everything was super flavourful and delicious. Plus the portions were so big that we probably could’ve just shared one thing! We had plenty of leftovers and were happy to eat it again the next day.

The Basil Box

dscf3563
Recently as an impromptu gathering, I made a bunch of friends go to The Basil Box because we figured we could just grab a giant table without any reservations.

I actually thought the cuisine was Thai (and would compete with the Salad King nearby) however, upon further inspection it is closer to Vietnamese food. The concept is simple, you choose your base: salad, rice, noodles etc, then protein and toppings. It was all very quick and served in less than 5 minutes at the ordering table. I had shrimp noodles with edamame, sweet potato in a Penang curry sauce.

I found that it lacked a bit of flavour. Not sure if it’s because they are trying to serve healthy portions but I could’ve used a lot more curry sauce! I ended up with too many noodles that were flavourless.

They had an interesting variety of sodas though and I got a Mash Grapefruit Citrus Zing.

I don’t think I’d necessarily go back here again. At the price range, I would rather go to Salad King!

What I Ate At TURF 2016

Now that TURF post you’ve all been waiting for! Here’s what I ate at the festival.

dscf3375

Delight fries from Delight Bite. It was fries with mayo and oregano. It was super simple but pretty good.

dscf3404

Mango peach fish tacos from 50 Pesos. This was definitely my favourite new eat of the weekend. The fish was perfectly fried and there was a perfect combination of sweetness and textures.

dscf3408

I really wanted to like this Apple Pie Waffle from Sweet Teeth Vegan, but I thought the lack of egg made the waffle kind of lifeless. The toppings helped saved it though as the candied apples, nuts and vegan soft serve were actually delicious.

dscf3520

This Jerk Chicken Mango Salad from Come and Get It was light and refreshing to have in between fried meals.

dscf3522

Smoothe Operator refreshed me with a lemonade.

dscf3539

So did this Cucumber, lime, mint grapefruit popsicle from my favourite place The Pop Stand.

dscf3540

Mill Street and Hop City Brewing had a free samples station on site.

dscf3541

Of course I couldn’t resist Indian Tacos from The Flying Chestnut Kitchen at every festival.

dscf3542

Chocolate & Vanilla cannolis from Holy Cannoli were a must eat.

dscf3558

I also tried a Guinness Gingerbread popsicle from The Pop Stand.

img_5790

Iroquois Kettle Corn’s white cheddar flavour was highly addictive.

img_5950

This fried shrimp and fries combo from Mustache Burger was a bit too much fried stuff in one go.

Brunch @ Fonda Lola

dscf3451

Last weekend, I went for birthday brunch with my friend at Fonda Lola, a cozy Mexican Restaurant at Ossington Station. There were a lot of cute decorations like Mexican wrestlers everywhere.

I ordered the Hangover Chilaquiles: Salsa Mexicana soaked tortilla chips topped with jalapeños, crema, Oaxaca cheese and a fried egg, avocado with a side of refried beans. The chips were soaked in a delicious sauce and had flavour in every bite. Now looking at the photo, I realize I never received the side of refried beans!

dscf3449

Not entirely sure why, but they had a tendency to be out of stuff like ketchup or juice for a margarita. I made due and ordered a Basil Mojito: Fresh basil and mint purée, citrus and housed aged Bacardi with a splash of soda.

dscf3447

Since we did just all wake up there was also a lot of coffee to go around.

Overall, I was satisfied with the food (or what I received of it).

What I Ate At FME

I can’t go to a music festival and not talk about what I ate there, so here we are with some of the stuff I had in Rouyn. It was amazing how well-taken care of we were by the festival. A few of these things were free.
dscf2817-2
The moment we arrived through the front gates of the festival, chunks of meat were seen BBQing on this thing. It was served to all media and industry!

dscf2821-2
Yum, free roasted meat, potato, pasta and veggies!

dscf2846-2
This signature FME drink had blue curacao and tasted like blue freezie. Warning: may cause hangovers.

dscf2852-2
An FME experience isn’t complete without experiencing Chez Morasse once (or 4 times). It was recommend you stick with the regular poutine, though my friend liked the À Tibi poutine with beef and green onions he ordered by accident.

dscf2853We were greeted each morning with a classic continental breakfast from our Hôtel Albert that was key to sustaining myself for the day.

dscf2854
Mmmm bourbon lemonade from Bonsound. I might have had more than a couple of these.

dscf2855
They also had a BBQ corn station with fancy spicy or basil butter you could roll your corn in. It was worth getting corn stuck in your teeth in front of people.

dscf2871Our hotel gave us these coupons for a place called Pizzadelic that we couldn’t seem to find until we realized it changed it’s name to Pizzé, a place which was literally right beside the hotel. I think Pizzadelic is a cooler name but maybe people don’t get it in French or something.

On the plus side, a fancy pizza place means I can order this summery mimosa with my pizza. It was literally called a Summer Mimosa, I don’t really know what’s in it, except a cherry.

dscf2873
I ordered the Di Rucco pizza with tomato prosciutto, boccocini, mozzarella, rapini and a balsamic vinaigrette. I liked all the fresh ingredients and the flavour of the balsamic really went well with it. The crust had just the right amount of crunch.

dscf3148On Saturday, we went to this crazy party for industry that literally had like piles of food. There was a pile of roasted brisket, pile of salad, potatos, salmon, eggplant. It was the first time I went to a party where the food was served in piles.

dscf3150
I created my own pile on my plate! Hah.

dscf3169
On Sunday I took a walk thinking I could explore the town and totally forgetting that everything closes on Sunday because it is very Catholic in Quebec. Sadly, two of the candy stores I wanted to visit were closed. Instead, I went to a random convenient store in search of local soda and found this Bec Cola. It was very interesting because it was flavoured with maple syrup which blended with the cranberry flavour that I chose. It was refreshing for my walk around town.

dscf3179Luckily, restaurants were open and I visited Le Saint-Exupéry, a Petit Prince themed café. My friend ordered a “Grilled Cheese du Business Man”, pictured above.

dscf3180
I can’t resist Benny’s at brunch so I went for “Le Concept” which had a swiss cheese infused sauce and potatos on the side.

dscf3182Le Gisement was the only candy store that was open because it was also a bistro.

dscf3184
Look at all those chocolate!

dscf3188
To avoid breaking my wallet, I chose 6: almond white chocolate thing, caramel, mocha, hazelnut and some things I ate too fast to remember.

dscf3296
On our final night I noticed that Chez Morasse also had ice cream so I had some Ferrero Rocher gelato.
