Impress Press-On Manicure by Broadway Nails

IMG_2637
A few months ago I received my first #MapleVoxBox from Influenster, a service that is a little like Klout but encourages you to be more involved.
IMG_2632The package was mailed to me in a little box with an Influenster sticker.
IMG_2638This edition featured Impress Manicure’s Press on Nails. Everybody received different colours. I got a purple and gold patter, as well as a bright orange. Both were things I wouldn’t normally wear but I kept the purple and gold and gave the orange to my little sister.

Each package has 24 nails in different sizes. They’re quite easy to put on. You just peel off the back and press down on your nails. Originally, I put them on upside down because I liked the rounded edge facing up. However, the rounded edge is supposed to line-up with cuticles. You get a longer-lasting nail when you put them on the right way.

IMG_8901I thought they looked nice, like I had a fancy manicure. However, I didn’t really like the general “feel” of them. They constantly felt like a burden on my fingers and whenever I brushed my fingers through my hair, they would get caught or fall off. They’re nice if you lack time and want to get fancy for a night out, but not something I’d wear day to day.

Instagram “Like” Necklace

IMG_9379I saw this adorable necklace the last time I ordered on Photojojo and had been thinking about it ever since. Then one day I gave in and impulsively ordered it.

IMG_9356IMG_9360I love their silly branding of always sending a dinosaur with every package. They even tell you that on the box. Not entirely sure why a little necklace needed a big box though.

IMG_9357IMG_9361The charm itself is a lot bigger than I thought it was in real life and sits on a shiny silver-plated chain. It’s a Photojojo exclusive made by modern jewellery company, Plastique.

IMG_9389It’s been a lovely accessory and conversation starter when meeting new people last week at CMW!

#GooglePlayMusic Launch Party

photo 5
Last night, I attended the Google Play Music Canada launch party! The service is Google’s entry into music streaming in Canada. For a limited the first month is free and $7.99/month (regular $9.99) after the trial. You can check out Google Play here.

The food was catered by La Carnita and there was plenty of it! I totally stuffed my face with free food and drinks. Everything was delicious, including a cookies and cream popsicle that was to die for.

The night’s entertainment was provided by Stars, Kevin Drew, A Tribe Called Red and Keys N’ Krates.

The room was familiar faces from my Twitter feed and I did muster up the courage to talk to a few of them.
photo 1There was also plenty of stations around with tablets and headphones to try out the new service. I will totally admit I avoided them for a little bit because all I saw was things like Mumford and Sons and Avril Lavigne on the screen but when I played around I realized there’s a huge catalogue of other music available and it will only keep growing. I also talked to a representative who talked about a hub that may be soon available to indie musicians.
IMG_9351
As I left the party, they handed out a wrapped gift that happened to be a Google Chromecast. I haven’t actually heard of it before the fact but I’m excited to try it.

Look out for my Chromecast experiences in my Vlog!

I Won 2048

photo 2

I was late to the 2048 train. I only got the game last week and I finally beat it yesterday. I feel strangely accomplished.

photo 1

In playing it a couple hundred times, I realized there is sort of a strategy to it, even if I didn’t exactly figure out where the “2s” spawn. Towards the end, I came close to winning many times and then finally did so by keeping these things in mind:

  • Stack numbers. Start by pressing left or right until you can’t, then go the other direction.
  • Don’t go down. When you have enough stacked, go up. Don’t go down. Going down leads to death. Alternatively you can only go down and avoid going up.
  • Get rid of 2s in the top corner ASAP. Turn the 2’s into a higher number ASAP so you don’t get stuck.
  • Careful with 2s and 4s beside each other. Think carefully when this happens and get unstuck or this usually leads to death.
  • Remember to feed yourself when you get addicted to playing the game.

Ride the Tempo on CBC Music!

CANADIAN-MUSIC-BLOGS_0306014641542_16x9_620x350
Today my music blog Ride the Tempo was featured in CBC’s list of “Canadian Music Blogs You Need to be Reading”. Normally I don’t care for lists but CBC was one of the early outlets that got me caring about Canadian music and influenced me to change the blog’s format to focus entirely on it. It was actually a difficult decision to make. Canadian music is not as popular or hit-generating as some of the bigger indie artists out there. Blogs that write about everything get a lot more hits, and return generate more ad-revenue.

I don’t blog because I think I’ll one day get rich off of it. I love exploring the Canadian music landscape. I care about it and will continue to do so.

iPad Menus @ 168 Sushi Buffet

photo 1
Mom’s favourite thing is AYCE sushi so for her birthday we took her to 168 Sushi Buffet where they took on the new trend of iPad menus. We went for lunch and I don’t think they took reservations so we waited over 20 minutes for a table. It was one of those cold Polar Vortex days but people kept coming in and were all eager for a table at this relatively small restaurant.

Lunches at the restaurant are cheaper but do not have sashimi, so if you want the raw fish without all the rice than dinner would be preferred. They did have a large assortment of non-japanese items. There was Thai, Korean and Chinese dim sum dishes that were available in addition to the Sushi and included in the lunch price ($14.99 – I think).

This was my first experience ordering off an iPad menu. It had this large case screwed on it to prevent the user from pressing the home button and going outside the menu. I felt it accommodated the large food selection well and had lovely photos that made all the food look very appetizing. The annoying part was that sometimes we would order something and it wouldn’t come. I enjoyed this salmon salad a lot and ordered more but it didn’t appear. I tried an additional time and the screen told me it was coming, but never did.

In my opinion the iPad was a tool that enabled the workers to be lazy. They could blame complicated orders not coming on technology. Waitresses only came when you confirmed an order on the iPad or when they were delivering food. There was often many empty plates waiting on our table to be taken away. I eventually figured out how to call a person by confirming an empty order.I curiously wonder what it must be like to work in the kitchen that deals with the receiving end of these iPad orders. I feel like the whole idea is a bit of a marketing gimmick.

The food was decent and there was a large selection of it, but it was not particularly memorable. Soups were a bit cold for my liking. However, the fried pudding dessert is recommended.

Loot Crate- December 2013 Edition

IMG_1314
December’s Loot Crate will be the final I’ll receive for a while. After too much holiday spending, I had to unsubscribe for the time being, until I have more extra income. Here’s what was inside! You can also watch my video unboxing here.

IMG_1303This month’s theme was Console Wars. Looks like things are still peaceful in this magnet of retro game controllers holding hands.

IMG_1300Every fighter needs some energy right? They gave some to us in the form of “Energems” bite sized mint chocolates. 3 of them apparently equals one energy drink. They also threw in a coupon for $1 off in case we need to recharge.

IMG_1307The more random (but awesome) of the items was the Tin-tastic activity kit from Funko. Inside each tin are stickers, pencils and erasers (mine are in the shape of Iron Man). The tin also makes great storage for any weird collectibles you might have.

IMG_1304I’m sure you’ve all experience the thing where your controller pads have fallen out leaving something that occasional cuts your thumbs. Well Grip It provided the solution to those problems with these mini pads.

IMG_1305Catbug and Impossibear look like they’re ready for war in this sticker.

IMG_1302So you can identify as a geek/gamer.

IMG_1311Last but not least is my favourite item, this mashup of Star Wars and the Console Wars idea. It’s so perfect for the theme.

You can get your own crates here! Use the code LOOT2014 for $3 off.

Gimme All Your Friend Codes

IMG_1151
Nash gave me my Christmas present early. I was surprised with a new Nintendo 2DS and a copy of Pokemon X! I’ve been wanting to play the game since I heard about its existence but buying a system for it wasn’t in my budget for now.

IMG_1157
The 2DS is the budget version of the 3DS but I’ve played Nash’s and always ended up turning down the 3D after a few minutes. I found the stereoscopic 3D to be a little headache inducing so the 2DS was actually perfect for my needs. It’s a little bit weird how it doesn’t flip, but holding it is actually comfy. The system itself is light and the L & R buttons are easier to press than the 3DS. The size is around 2 iPhone 4S placed beside each other.

Though it can’t display the stereophonic 3D, there are still two cameras on the back for taking 3D images that can be viewed elsewhere. It hasn’t affected my gameplay of Pokemon at all, I’m loving it!

If you have a 2DS/3DS let me know your code and I’ll add you. Mine is: 3926-5891-9582. Now back to becoming a Pokemon master.

I Joined We Heart It

weheartit

After hearing about We Heart It on a couple of tech blogs, I decided to check it out. It has been around for a few years but picked up in the media recently for having over 25 million active users. The network was created as a place to share inspiring images. It differs from Tumblr and Pinterest in that you can’t comment. You simply upload and “heart” stuff. This makes it harder for people to cyberbully or troll. If you don’t like something, you simply don’t heart it.

I had a first hand experience on how many people actually use this network. I signed up, uploaded the snowflake photo in my previous post and within half an hour had 100 hearts. That’s amazing considering I started out with no followers.

The network also has a beautiful iOS/Android app. Now excuse me as I go heart some more stuff. You can follow me here.

Curating Awesome On Tumblr

tumblr

Recently, I made a personal Tumblr page. Obviously, I’ve used Tumblr before but they were all for clients or themed websites like photos of my dog, music, pokemon chibis, elegant books and of course my photography blog. I previously never saw the value of having a page for reblogging or sharing whatever tickled my curiosities. Then I made one.

Interestingly, I’ve gained a modest following in the short time I’ve had it. I didn’t think people would find my content curation that interesting, but apparently they do! I mix in both original (that I’ve created) and things others made that I find interesting, inspiring or just down right entertaining. I’m also going to be venturing into the world of graphic design and creative photography projects I’ve been wanting to attempt for a while. Don’t worry I’m not leaving this place! Tumblr is just quicker and easier for sharing things instantly. I’ll probably share the projects here, once they are more refined (don’t want to bog you guys down!).

Looking at other people’s Tumblrs, I find it fascinating that even blogs with a huge reblog ratio have a certain personality and character. Now in using it, I totally understand why the network is popular, beyond humour blogs.

You can find me on Tumblr at teepoo.tumblr.com.
