We Brought a Pug Into Galleria Mall and Saw Snakes

This is Lana in a bag.

Last weekend, my friends and I snuck a pug into Galleria Mall. We really wanted to go take a photo with Galleria Santa Claus and see this snake show going on. How those two things relate, or why someone decided that snakes was appropriate as a Christmas activity I will never know.

Anyways there really was snakes in the mall:

We saw these adorable little girls who really wanted to touch all the snakes. They are braver than we were.

We attempted a 3 person + pug photo booth but I came as darkness in the background.

A real Santa photo did happen but not in the sad Gallery castle that I wanted. He happened to be in the Reimagine Galleria centre.

Anyways, Galleria Mall is such a special place and I really hope that they keep the small businesses, and the unique qualities that make it memorable.

Explanation of Bigger Font

You may have noticed that I have increased the font size on here. That is because I want to highlight my writing more.

Don’t worry, the giant photos won’t be going anywhere! The teeny tiny font I had before looked cool, but it always made my writing feel secondary and some of the posts got a tiny bit lazy.

As the blog nears it’s two year anniversary (of blogging every day), I want to find ways to improve it (and me along with it.)

Now all the food descriptions will be as drool-worthy as the photos and my longform posts more meaningful.

Thank you all for continuing to read and follow my weird life ride.

Bonus tip: if you ever wanted your blog to stop hyphenating words instead of wrapping here is some css code
.site-content article, .widget-area .widget { word-wrap: normal; -webkit-hyphens: none; -moz-hyphens: none; hyphens: none; }

Social Anxiety at Events

anxious

It’s holiday season. That means tons of social events with work, family and friends. My life has a lot of that stuff in general but around the holidays, a lot of it can be condensed into a short period of time.

What a lot of people don’t seem to know – and I have definitely improved on – is my social anxiety.

I often feel like my mind has left my body and am watching myself feeling like a tomato in a room full of potatoes.

That was probably a bizarre comparison but I often feel like everyone is so confident with small talk (or talking in general) that I don’t know what to say. Or worse it comes out as verbal diarrhea.

The thing I realized is: I’m not alone.

I had a meet up the other day and an artist that I was hanging out with, who is a totally badass performer live had the same shyness and anxieties in the room that I did. We talked to each other about being afraid to chat with people but then proceeded to think of opening lines. It was kind of fun to know that someone else was having similar reservations, especially someone who is super confident on stage.

We met and bonded with some new people. It’s totally okay to be a ball of nervous energy.

Queens Girls

My friend Jimena recently Kickstarted the first in a series of books for girls. Queens Girls are stories of real women turned into fairy tales in hopes of inspiring girls to follow their dreams. They want to break the stereotypical roles girls are usually put into in stories: the caretaker or the love interest.

With each book purchase, they’ll also donate it to a child struggling to dream. I love this idea!

The first one will be of Bessie Coleman, the first African American woman in the world to get a pilot’s license.

The illustrations are beautiful and I can’t wait to see what else they will release.

Self-Care Sundays

dscf4279

Self-care may seem like a millennial buzzword that has come up a lot lately but personally, I think it’s important.

I took the idea of self-care Sundays from Estée Lalonde’s book Bloom and created my own version. Essentially, it’s taking some time weekly to perform a routine you personally find relaxing. I like Sundays because it gets you into the right state of mind before starting a new week.

Here is what my Self-care Sunday looks like:

  1. Take a Bath
  2. Use a facial mask
  3. Do my nails
  4. Read a book/watch TV or write in my journal

You can literally do anything you want as your set of tasks as long as it’s relaxing whether it’s make a cup of tea, watch the sunset, whatever. I like my routine because I have so many beauty products, it is fun to have a night to dedicate to actually using them. These are things I often don’t think I have time to do but there’s always time if you allow it to happen. Also, Nash knows to let me have this time to myself!

Do you have a self-care day? What do you do?

Dollarama Review: Dog Deer Costume

Dollarama has a wide variety of pet stuff including some Christmas costumes! Teddy became a reindeer without breaking the bank. The only con is they only have one size but we managed to squeeze both parts through his giant head.

How does he look?

Tidbits of My Weekend

After I clocked out of work on Friday, my weekend was pretty insane. So here are some random social snapshots!

First we went to a holiday party and stayed up super late karaoking:

The next day I was on a team live tweeting the Canadian Folk Music Awards. We had some awesome feedback.

My teammate and I found some fancy chairs to sit in.

December Can Be Overwhelming

December can be a hard month for anxiety. I’m anxious for the year to be over. I’m anxious to finish Christmas shopping. I’m anxious to spend more time with family. I’m anxious about all the goals I set for myself, and what I did and didn’t achieve.

Pulling through the last stretch, but hanging in there. I hope you all are too!

Tracking the water I drink

I have been embracing wearables and finding fun health things to track.

Something I often lack in my day is water so I am trying the Waterminder app. It has a suggested daily intake due to your weight and activity. You can then program cup sizes that you normally drink. For example a grande at Starbucks is 470ml. All liquid counts but water is the most recommended.

There are achievements to unlock and constant reminders throughout the day to remind you take sips. They appear on my Apple Watch too, which can be a tiny bit aggressive. At least now I have no excuse not to drink more water!
