The Basil Box

dscf3563
Recently as an impromptu gathering, I made a bunch of friends go to The Basil Box because we figured we could just grab a giant table without any reservations.

I actually thought the cuisine was Thai (and would compete with the Salad King nearby) however, upon further inspection it is closer to Vietnamese food. The concept is simple, you choose your base: salad, rice, noodles etc, then protein and toppings. It was all very quick and served in less than 5 minutes at the ordering table. I had shrimp noodles with edamame, sweet potato in a Penang curry sauce.

I found that it lacked a bit of flavour. Not sure if it’s because they are trying to serve healthy portions but I could’ve used a lot more curry sauce! I ended up with too many noodles that were flavourless.

They had an interesting variety of sodas though and I got a Mash Grapefruit Citrus Zing.

I don’t think I’d necessarily go back here again. At the price range, I would rather go to Salad King!

I’m Playing Piano at Nuit Blanche

I’ll be facing one of my greatest anxieties on Saturday: performing. I’ll be performing a live soundtrack for Erwin Olaf’s art-video project Waiting during Nuit Blanche on Saturday.

The film features a woman that is forever waiting at a table with a score written by Sebastiaan Roestenburg which will be played live throughout the night by different people.

You can catch it at 134 Queen West 7pm-7am but I will be on at 12:06am!

What I Ate At TURF 2016

Now that TURF post you’ve all been waiting for! Here’s what I ate at the festival.

dscf3375

Delight fries from Delight Bite. It was fries with mayo and oregano. It was super simple but pretty good.

dscf3404

Mango peach fish tacos from 50 Pesos. This was definitely my favourite new eat of the weekend. The fish was perfectly fried and there was a perfect combination of sweetness and textures.

dscf3408

I really wanted to like this Apple Pie Waffle from Sweet Teeth Vegan, but I thought the lack of egg made the waffle kind of lifeless. The toppings helped saved it though as the candied apples, nuts and vegan soft serve were actually delicious.

dscf3520

This Jerk Chicken Mango Salad from Come and Get It was light and refreshing to have in between fried meals.

dscf3522

Smoothe Operator refreshed me with a lemonade.

dscf3539

So did this Cucumber, lime, mint grapefruit popsicle from my favourite place The Pop Stand.

dscf3540

Mill Street and Hop City Brewing had a free samples station on site.

dscf3541

Of course I couldn’t resist Indian Tacos from The Flying Chestnut Kitchen at every festival.

dscf3542

Chocolate & Vanilla cannolis from Holy Cannoli were a must eat.

dscf3558

I also tried a Guinness Gingerbread popsicle from The Pop Stand.

Iroquois Kettle Corn’s white cheddar flavour was highly addictive.

This fried shrimp and fries combo from Mustache Burger was a bit too much fried stuff in one go.

Music We Grew Up With

If I had a million dollars

A post shared by Tiana Feng (@tianafeng) on

There’s something special about the music we grew up with, that we liked when we were kids or that our parents like. I feel like hearing these songs years later are still exciting (even if some of the original members no longer are in the band for whatever reason). This weekend was full of that at TURF.

I got to see The Barenaked Ladies, Jimmy Eat World, Death Cab for Cutie, LUSH, Ween and more. Photos to come soon!

Celebrity Hotpot

DSCF2797

Last weekend, I went to Celebrity Hotpot with a friend.  It was All You Can Eat style for around $21. The menu for ordering wasn’t as vast as Morals, but had all the basics: beef, lamb, pork, tendons, meatballs etc. There were also a variety of noodles, seafood (some cost extra).

I really enjoyed the two broths we chose: winter-melon and drunken chicken. The flavours of both actually made their way into the ingredients we put in the pot.

There was a serve yourself section that held a wide variety of sauces, green onions, eggs and also soy milk, iced tea and plum juice that were included in the price of the meal. I had quite a few glasses of the honey iced tea. It was refreshing.

The two of us ordered way too much food but they didn’t charge extra. We went home full and satisfied with this hotpot spot.

I almost forgot to post about the yummy goodies I had at Camp Wavelength. This year they expanded their food choices a bit so there was more than just burgers.

Of course I couldn’t resist getting some delicious popsicles from The Pop Stand.

I had so many I can’t remember the flavours of all of them!

Return to Yellow Griffin

DSCF2461

For our burger anniversary date, we returned to The Yellow Griffin. It’s been a while since we were last there and they’ve introduced a few new burgers.

DSCF2466

I had the Chilly Willy which was crispy onion strings, fried apples, and habanero BBQ sauce. It wasn’t too spicy but I loved the combination of hot and sweet. At Yellow Griffin you are able to choose what animal you want the patty to be and I decided to try camel. It was a tiny bit gamey but much like a regular burger otherwise.

DSCF2467

Nash ordered the Maple Spice bison burger which was maple poached golden pear, caramelized onion, Italian prosciutto, smothered in brie.

What I ate at TIME Festival 2016

DSCF2308

Yesterday was super hot but I still kicked myself out of the house and went to TIME Festival. Luckily, I found this Chill booth and had some pink lemonade.

DSCF2301

I arrived super hungry for lunch and hit up the Street Bistro truck, one I haven’t previously been at!

DSCF2302

For $10, I ordered two fish tacos. Although they were tasty, I thought the portions were too small for the price. It was like two bites of food!

DSCF2341

All day I was tempted by the smell of this BBQ stand so I couldn’t resist an early dinner.

DSCF2342

For $11, the portions were much larger than the tacos. I received a chicken thigh, rice, beans and salad. This was definitely worth the festival price. Not to mention the chicken was juicy and delicious.

By now, I have eaten almost all the food trucks at festivals but I’ll continue to be on the lookout for more and let you guys know if they are worth the price!
